And the Winner is...

For weeks I have been checking the daily bulletin from the Vatican for the replacement for Cardinal Bertone in Genoa who has been re-called to Rome as Benedict XVI's right hand man. The rumor (which we referenced here in a column on July 2nd) was that Cardinal Re, current secretary of the Congregation for Bishops, was tipped to go northwards instead. When I read last week that Re had paid a visit to Castel Gandolfo to see the Pope, I expected his nomination was imminent. This morning (August 29) the Vatican announced the appointment of Archbishop Angelo Bagnasco the head of the Italian Military Ordinariate as Bertone's successor in Genoa. Typically Genoa is a cardinalatial see so expect a red hat to descend upon the Archbishop in due course. So Re stays (for now at least) in Rome. Who knows perhaps he has been nominated somewhere else.
