The "Twelve Days" Myth

December 24, 2006

Every year this myth circulates. It claims, in essence, that the famous "Twelve Days of Christmas" ditty was originally an English Catholic catechism tune with the double meanings enlarged upon at the link given. Conspiracy theorists everywhere love stories like this. There is only one problem with the theory: not one of the supposed double meanings is not shared by the largest Protestant communion in Britain, namely the "Church of England". In other words why would Catholics supposedly conceal their beliefs behind an innocuous song when their Protestant counter-parts believe the same things ? (Everything except the part about the seven Sacraments, that is, but the myth gives another interpretation for this.) Judging by this column's title you know where I stand on the issue... A Blessed Twelve Days though !
