The Pope gets a new Wardrobe

December 8th, 2005

I was wondering if he would do it and he did. I must confess I have been checking photo archives since October 31st to see whether it would happen (the date when bishops traditionally adopted the winter garb). Not only has Pope Benedict XVI revived the use of a lace rochet for Papal choir dress but he has also revived the use of the winter mozetta not seen since the time of Pope Paul VI. Today in Rome on a visit to greet a statue of Our Lady the Pope could be seen sporting the traditional Papal Winter wear with in addition the revival of the little hood on the ermine-trimmed red mozetta. The hood was abolished by Paul VI with the decree Ut sive sollicite of March 31 1969. It seems that what one Pope has done away with can be revived by another after all ! The stole it will be noted is obviously new and also very traditional - it bears his coat of arms on it. What happens with dress could happen elsewhere in other areas of the Church as well. It should be noted that no legislation was issued - it just happened....
