The Tale of 3 Parakeets
January 16th, 2008
(From left to right) Charity and Faith (on the swing) Hope (in the corner)
In 2000 three little parakeets were born to us and we named them Faith, Hope and Charity (since theology distinguishes these really distinct theological virtues as being three in number).
Thus I was very perplexed when I read paragraph 2 of the encyclical Spe salvi
Faith is Hope
“Hope”, in fact, is a key word in Biblical faith—so much so that in several passages the words “faith” and “hope” seem interchangeable. Thus the Letter to the Hebrews closely links the “fullness of faith” (10:22) to “the confession of our hope without wavering” (10:23).
I was sure there must have been a mistake and today I realized what it was... that was then this is now... for today Hope and Charity are no longer among the living, but Faith remains:
Evidently Hope is not Faith and vice-versa...
