Papa-day... a success !

La Repubblica estimated the attendance was 200, 000, Reuter's had it at 100, 000, Andrea Tornielli of Il Giornale plumped for 150, 000. Any way you measure it...it was a success as the photos show. Camillo Cardinal Ruini, the Cardinal Vicar for Rome, (smiling from ear to ear below) proved yet again that he has only to whistle these days and they come a-running. Now why wasn't that the case under John Paul II ? Reportedly the Pope received three straight minutes of applause ! "Silly students !" one functionary opined, "They missed the opportunity to hear one of the greatest intellectuals alive !" Well did anyone think that people go to college to learn anything these days ?

I said I would also be there via the internet... for some strange reason the Vatican didn't broadcast the Angelus address today or at least I wasn't able to log on, but since I had been trying since 5.00 am I tend to think the thing wasn't transmitted. A few weeks ago they forgot to turn on the sound and all that was broadcast was the picture. Well you can't have everything ! Today, however, there was nothing.
