Fanning the "Flames" of "Purgatory"
January 30th, 2008

Revisited.
The last column evoked this request:
Dear Bishop,
God reward you for the fascinating text of Cardinal Ratzinger on Purgatory, albeit not such an easy read!
Having persevered through it to the very end (footnotes and all), I would love to know your personal opinion and critique of it, strictly off the record and privatim, as it were of course, should you so condescend to share such....
Gratefully,Fr. X
Well, I am happy to do so publicly. Joseph Ratzinger published this work the year he was appointed Archbishop of Munich and elevated to the Cardinalate in 1977. His comments on Purgatory being "Jesus" himself were drawn from a work written by Fr. Joachim Gnilka. Gnilka's book, published in 1955, was his thesis to obtain his doctorate. Named to the Pontifical Biblical Commission by Paul VI in 1973, he was re-confirmed in his membership of said commission by Pope John Paul II retiring in 1988.
Considering the work upon which Joseph Ratzinger relied was written in the pontificate of Pius XII for a doctorate at a Catholic University, I am sure if there were a problem with it snooping Rome would have found out and scotched it. Remember Teilhard was under censure as were others....de Lubac, Congar etc. Again this is a position that has been held by a respected Catholic Theologian who never seems to have fallen foul of Rome it would appear.
In my original post on this subject, however, I said this: "I personally believe the pains of Purgatory to be a material fire, but from what we see above there is room for maneuver since the theories are only 'opinions'."
