All Quiet on the Motu Proprio Front
November 16, 2006

Today the Pope called together the heads of the various congregations and pontifical commissions to discuss the case of Archbishop Milingo the "problem child" of the new pontificate. Milingo who "wedded" a Korean woman in a ceremony conducted by the founder of the "Moonies" sect, returned to his "spouse" earlier this year. In an apparent response to a letter addressed to the Pope to reconsider the discipline of celibacy in the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church by Milingo, the Pope convoked today's meeting.
Last week it was originally reported that the meeting was called to discuss the motu proprio - a report subsequently denied by a Vatican spokesman. The only item on the agenda was apparently the celibacy issue for the whole of the nearly three hour meeting.
The result: a terse communiqué from the Vatican re-affirming the discipline of celibacy.
Why an extraordinary meeting to re-state the obvious ? Your guess is as good as mine...
