Bishop Walter Mixa
on Latin and the Liturgy

November 23, 2006

The German bishops have been making their ad limina visits to Rome of late. According to a posting on a French website, one of them (Bishop Walter Mixa, Bishop of Augsburg) recently addressed the question of the liturgy. During the course of a day dedicated to religious music and musicians he said:

"During the recent ad limina visits of the German bishops to Rome, Pope Benedict XVI drew our attention to the liturgical question, and particularly the dignity of the celebrations. We celebrate, in effect, the renewed liturgy in the wake of the Tradition of the Tridentine Liturgy. Consequently, it is of capital importnace to celebrate it with the greatest dignity possible."

At the beginning of November 2006, Bishop Mixa wrote a letter to all the priests of his diocese recommending that they read the instruction Redemptionis Sacramentum (of Pope John Paul II) and he exhorted them to a faithful respect for all the liturgical norms. In the letter he wrote:

"It would be judicious to celebrate, from time to time, but regularly, the Mass in the Latin Language. Priests are servants of the liturgy not its creators."

In his talk to the musicians the bishop continued:

"It must be clearly stated that during liturgical celebrations it is Christ that matters and nobody else."

Sounds like the Pope is beginning to connect with some of his brother bishops at long last...
