Open Letter Addressed to Pope Benedict XVI
November 27, 2005

The
following open appeal to the Pope to recognize the right of Catholics to
the Traditional Mass can be found online at the Centre
Saint-Paul website. It was written by Fr. Guillaume de Tanouarn who
offers the Mass in Paris, France under the 1988 Indult of Pope John Paul
II together with Fr Claude Barthe and Fr Paul Aulagnier.
Aulagnier was for 18 years the district superior for France of the Society of St Pius X. Ironically, as it now appears, Fr Aulagnier was expelled from the Society a few years ago for advocating that the Society should reach a deal with Rome something which Bishop Fellay and cohorts are now seeking to realize. | Très Saint Père, Votre élection au Souverain Pontificat a suscité, dans le peuple de Dieu, une immense espérance. Nous nous adressons à vous comme à un père, que nous savons proche de ses enfants et attentif à leur bien spirituel. A votre propos, nous répétons avec le Seigneur : « si votre fils vous demande du pain, lui donnerez-vous une pierre ? ». Ce que nous vous demandons ? Que vous affirmiez, comme pape, ce que vous avez déjà écrit à maintes reprises, comme théologien : que le rite traditionnel de la messe latine peut être regardé comme légitime dans toute l’Eglise latine, y jouissant même d’une primauté d’honneur. N’est-ce pas vous qui écriviez, à ce propos, dans le Sel de la terre : « une communauté qui déclare soudain strictement interdit ce qui était jusqu’alors pour elle tout ce qu’il y a de plus sacré et de plus haut, et à qui l’on présente comme inconvenant le regret que l’on en a, se met elle-même en question. Comment la croirait on encore ? Ne va-t-elle pas interdire demain, ce qu’elle prescrit aujourd’hui ? ». Nous ne demandons aucun privilège, aucune loi particulière… c’est de justice qu’il s’agit, de cette justice qui fomente partout la paix. Vous avez vous-même souligné que ceux qui refusent aux fidèles, la possibilité de jouir paisiblement des trésors de culture que les siècles de tradition catholique nous ont légués, mettaient en danger la crédibilité de l’Eglise. C’est pourquoi notre confiance est grande en cette supplique. Nous prions à toutes vos intentions dont nous savons qu’elles sont celles de l’Eglise épouse du Christ. Most Holy Father, Your election as Sovereign Pontiff gave rise, in the people of God, to an immense hope. We speak to you as to a father, whom we know is near to his children and attentive to their spiritual good. To you, we repeat with the Lord: "if your son asks you for bread, will you give him a stone? ". What do we ask of you? That you might affirm, as a pope, what you already wrote on several occasions, as a theologian: that the traditional rite of the Latin Mass can be considered legitimate in all the Latin Church, enjoying even a primacy of honor. Weren't you the one who wrote, on this subject, in Salt of Earth: "a community who suddenly declares forbidden what was until then the most sacred and the highest thing, and who considers improper to regret it, puts itself (its existence) in question. How could it be still believed? Won't it prohibit tomorrow, what it prescribes today?" We ask for no privilege, no particular law... it is about justice, of this justice that foments peace everywhere. You stressed yourself that those who refuse the faithful the possibility of enjoying the cultural treasures peacefully transmitted by centuries of Catholic Tradition, endanger the credibility of the Church.
