Like a bridge over troubled water

Pope Benedict and Patriarch Bartholomew
Pontifex Maximus is one of the titles attributed to the Pope. 'Pontifex' means 'bridge builder' and "maximus' means 'great' hence the Pope is meant to be the : 'Great Bridge Builder'.
So what ? Well that is the point of this column...
The Pope is more than just the Pope of traditional Catholics yet so many Trads act as if he should be just in charge of them. What do I mean ? Many Trads are holding out for a Papal crackdown - the excommunication of all who do not hold to Traditionalism. This will never happen ! And why not ? The answer is simple, the Pope is meant to be the Great Bridge Builder ! Some have charged Pope Benedict as being an "ecumaniac" yet it seems to me that if the Church is meant to be universal that is "Catholic" or "ecumenical", she should reach out to those without the fold.
Pope Benedict has done just this - he continues to reach outside the fold. Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow has never seemed so warm to Rome as under this Pope. With John Paul II there was a definite Arctic freeze but Pope Benedict has managed to breathe new life into the discussion and fairly rapidly at that.
Quoting lyrics from one of Liverpool's gifts to the world, (the Fab Four) a jousting blogger priest friend of mine suggests that my vision of Pope Benedict's pontificate has been one of "Nowhere man"
"He's as blind as he can be,
Just sees what he wants to see,
Nowhere Man can you see me at all?"
I prefer to cross the pond and quote from an equally famous American popular song to reference the Pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI:
When you're weary, feeling small,
When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all;
I'm on your side. when times get rough
And friends just cant be found,
Like a bridge over troubled water
Pope Benedict is busy building bridges to all who wish to cross them safe from the troubled waters below ! The Motu is law in less than 12 hours !
