of

the Coat of Arms

 of

The Most Reverend Terence Fulham

BLAZON: Per pale azure and or an oak tree eradicated counterchanged; on a chief argent between two tudor roses a heart enflamed gules. Behind the shield an Episcopal cross palewise or. Ensigned by a galero with cords and twelve tassels disposed in three rows of one, two and three respectively all vert. On a scroll below the shield the motto: “Sicut Quercus”.

EXPLANATION: Bishop Fulham’s coat of arms depicts symbols of his faith, devotion and ethnic background. The principle charge on the field is an oak tree, a symbol of faith as well as an allusion to the motto. It is depicted in two different colors, gold (yellow) and blue as being symbolic of Bishop Fulham’s conversion to the Church.

On a separate portion of the shield comprising the top third called a “chief” we see a silver (white) field with three charges. The two roses described as tudor roses, that is, with red and white petals and green leaves, are symbolic of both England and St. Therese the Little Flower. Between these roses there is a red heart with a flame issuing from the top representing Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart.

The shield has a processional or Episcopal cross standing vertically behind the shield and extending above and below it. Above the shield is a green ecclesiastical hat called a galero. Such hats are used in ecclesiastical heraldry in place of the shield and crest. The hat has green cords which terminate in six green tassels on each side. These ornaments are those proper to a prelate with the rank of bishop according to the Instruction of the Holy See, “Ut Sive”.

On a scroll below the shield is the motto, “Sicut Quercus” which is “Like an oak (tree)”.

The coat of arms of Bishop Fulham was designed and emblazoned by the Reverend Father Guy W. Selvester of the Diocese of Metuchen, New Jersey . Working as a heraldic artist and designer for the past eighteen years Father Selvester has designed coats of arms for several prelates and institutions in the Church. He is a member of the American College of Heraldry and the Societe Heraldique du Canada.
