Blazon
and Explanation of
the
Coat of Arms of The
Most Reverend BLAZON:
Per pale azure and or an oak tree eradicated counterchanged; on a chief argent
between two tudor roses a heart enflamed gules. Behind the shield an Episcopal
cross palewise or. Ensigned by a galero with cords and twelve tassels disposed
in three rows of one, two and three respectively all vert. On a scroll below the
shield the motto: “Sicut Quercus”. EXPLANATION:
Bishop Fulham’s coat of arms depicts symbols of his faith, devotion and ethnic
background. The principle charge on the field is an oak tree, a symbol of faith
as well as an allusion to the motto. It is depicted in two different colors,
gold (yellow) and blue as being symbolic of Bishop Fulham’s conversion to the
Church. On
a separate portion of the shield comprising the top third called a “chief”
we see a silver (white) field with three charges. The two roses described as
tudor roses, that is, with red and white petals and green leaves, are symbolic
of both The
shield has a processional or Episcopal cross standing vertically behind the
shield and extending above and below it. Above the shield is a green
ecclesiastical hat called a galero. Such hats are used in ecclesiastical
heraldry in place of the shield and crest. The hat has green cords which
terminate in six green tassels on each side. These ornaments are those proper to
a prelate with the rank of bishop according to the Instruction of the Holy See,
“Ut Sive”. On
a scroll below the shield is the motto, “Sicut Quercus” which is “Like an
oak (tree)”. The
